今天我们继续跟大家分享那些源于《圣经》的习语：
1. make bricks without straw 没有稻草却要做砖
语出：《圣经》旧约的Exodus《出埃及记》，原文为：That same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, as well as supervisors, “You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks; let them go and gather straw for themselves. （NRSV）
而《圣经》钦定本的原文为：Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. (KJV)
《圣经·出埃及记》中有这样的记载：从前以色列人在埃及常常给埃及人做苦力，为埃及人干和泥、制砖等粗活。当时，砖头是用稻草、贝壳、木炭等混合制成的。有一次，埃及法老要以色列人用和平时一样多的稻草制造出更多的砖，以色列人终于被迫逃出埃及。
如今，制砖当然不再用稻草，不过make bricks without straw成为一个常用习语留传了下来，，意思是：to do a job without the necessary materials（作无米之炊）。
此言喻指： 做无米之炊
E.g: One cannot make bricks without straw. 巧妇难为无米之炊。
2. firstborn of Egypt
直译为：埃及人的长子
语出：语出：《圣经》旧约的Exodus《出埃及记》，原文为：At night the Lord struck down all the fist born in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon (地牢), and all the firstborn of the livestock.（NRSV）
据《圣经》记载:埃及法老王因他心里刚硬，不肯听从摩西和亚伦屡次的请求，让以色列民离开埃及地，（神就吩咐摩西、亚伦在法老面前多行神迹奇事，用十大灾难降临到埃及。其中第十大灾难就是“长子之灾”，神以末次之灾来警告法老，就是约到半夜的时候，他出去巡行埃及遍地，从宝座的法老，直到磨子后的婢女所有的长子，以及一切头生的牲畜，尽都杀了，在埃及遍地必有大哀号，无一家不死一个人。长子是一家人的代表，古时候的人最尊重长子，所以这灾使埃及上下人民分外忧惧。当初法老要怎样除灭了神的长子－－神的选民以色列人，现在神也要除灭法老的长子和他的军兵。
此言喻指：巨大的灾难，特别的不幸和哀伤
2. to sleep with one’s fathers 与列祖同睡
语出：《圣经》旧约的Samuel《撒母耳记下》，原文为 “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up you offspring after you, who shall come forth from you body, and I will establish his kingdom.”（NRSV）
而《圣经》钦定本的原文为：And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. (KJV)
此言喻指：与世长辞
E.g: Every man will sleep with his fathers in the end. 每人都将会与世长辞。
